Benevolent Irish Society - Lecture Series Collection

The collection contains recordings of lectures delivered at the BIS Hall (now the Irish Cultural Centre) in Charlottetown during the years 1987 - 2011 on various aspects of Irish heritage and culture both in PEI and in Ireland.

: The Worthy Heirs of Larry Gorman; This is a lecture by John Cousins titled “The Worthy Heirs of Larry Gorman”, where he tells jokes and stories, introducing famous folk singers and songwriters, with a focus on James H Fitzgerald, John Doyle, Dan Reilly, and Harold Doyle, among other Irish folk singers and influencers.

: Thomas D'Arcy McGee; Padraig O’Siadhail gives a lecture titled “Thomas D’arcy McGee” at the B.I.S Irish Heritage Lecture Series. In his lecture O'Siadhail talks about the life of D’arcy McGee being one entangled with politics. Although he was a brilliant poet, novelist and had charm Thomas D’arcy McGee’s political was not triumphant in the end as he was power hungry, continuously switched parties and lost many of his Irish supporters. He eventually was assassinated, but still remains a hallmark in Canadian politics.

: Ulster Immigration to PEI; This is a lecture by Brendan O’Grady titled “Ulster Immigration to PEI”, where he discusses historic Ulster, acquiring land, Ireland and Scotland relations, assimilation, Father Augustus and jobs in Boston. The lecture also includes discussion about arrivals of ships, graveyards, Monaghan, Ulster immigration, families, religion, tradition and other topics relating to Ulster immigration.

: Valiant Voice: Poems by Lucy Gertrude Clarkin; This is a lecture by Brendan O’Grady titled “A Valiant Voice: Poems by Lucy Gertrude Clarkin”, where O’Grady reads poems from a collection. The poems have focus on topics like war, songs, Ireland, Belgium, prayer, peace, family, priesthood, fulfillment, PEI heritage, among many other topics. The lecture includes Brendan O’Grady’s analysis of the poems, their word choice, and voice.
