Milton Buell was born on Prince Edward Island in [1907 or 1908]. He lived in the community of Abney, near Murray Harbour. In his youth he had a long standing position as the caretaker of the Mount Herbert Orphanage from 1929-1940. His employment at the orphanage left an impact on Milton as he wept at the demolition of the structure in 1998 and openly defended its reputation against allegations of mistreated patients. Milton left his position as caretaker of the orphanage in 1940 as he had volunteered in the Canadian military and went overseas that same year.
After returning home Milton planted over two hundred Linden trees on the property of the orphanage, many of which still remain standing. Milton Buell was also active in the community as he was a frequent contributor to the "Voice of Island Seniors" and various other opinion columns in the Guardian well into his nineties. Milton had strong feelings against animal cruelty, and a love for the game of checkers, seeking new opponents into his final days.
Milton Buell died on June 6th, 2006 at the age of 99 in the Garden Nursing Home on Prince Edward Island. He was the husband of Catherine M. Buell and was survived by his many brothers and sisters. At his funeral Branch #1 of the Canadian Legion paid tribute to their fallen comrade.
