Scope and Content
This series contains 33 reel-to-reel audio tapes and 3 videocassettes of interviews in Gaelic and English of twenty Islanders, including John MacLennan, the last fluent Gaelic speaker in PEI at that time. The interviews were conducted by Dr. Shaw and recorded with the assistance of James Watson. An additional music recording session was recorded by John Weyman in September 1987. Interviews were recorded in mono, while singing and music were recorded in stereo. Topics covered in these interviews often include family background, attitudes towards the Gaelic language, stories and storytelling, Gaelic songs, Scottish and local folklore, nicknames, and the role of music and dance in Gaelic culture. The tapes also include samples of traditional Gaelic violin or fiddle music. The series also contains photocopies of three notebooks containing Dr. Shaw’s project field notes and some contact information for informants.
